Excerpt from Chapter 6

It’s been over a year since we stopped the Fingertip Killer, and I still
have nightmares about my time in his chair. Although they’re less frequent
than before, they are just as real. I find myself rubbing my reattached
finger whenever I’m in deep concentration about a case, the digit Seth
Avery cut off as his last act before he died. For whatever reason, it helps me
focus in my thought processes, especially when investigating criminals.

Surprisingly, Crystal and I are still holding on to our long-distance
relationship. I visit her, she comes to see me, or we meet halfway. If it
ever ends, I don’t know what I’ll do. She’s talked about moving out here
and joining the DC Metropolitan PD or possibly applying at the FBI, and
I wish she would. We’ve never discussed being exclusive, but the only
other girls I spend time with are Zee, Noah’s wife and daughter, Danielle
and Juelle, and of course the love of my life Grandma.
